Patrick Hofbauer, President and CEO of the Swedish state gambling operator Svenska Spel, criticized the domestic model of restaurant casinos. According to the functionary, these institutions operate “almost without rules and control.”
Hofbauer made the remarks on the corporate blog Svenska Spel, where he criticized the separate rules that restaurant casinos in the country use, as well as the resulting lack of official data. According to him, the situation contributes to massive money laundering.
Restaurant casinos are gambling establishments on the premises with a license to sell liquor. Svenska Spel has a monopoly on regular gambling establishments in Sweden through its Casino Cosmopol brand. However, other operators are allowed to offer table games at these locations.
Patrick Hofbauer noted: “Today there are about 375 casino restaurant permits in Sweden. We do not have statistics on users who play in a restaurant casino and seek help, because this is not in the official data of the authorities.”
“Those who have problems with gambling often become addicted and use the services of several companies at once. It is possible that the same picture is observed among the guests of restaurant casinos, ”the functionary added.
Hofbauer also criticized the amount that visitors can spend and the speed at which this can be done: “With the new gambling law, the blackjack betting limit has more than tripled from a maximum of 75 SEK to 236 SEK per hand. It may seem insignificant, but under these conditions, you can easily get rid of a thousand in one minute.
Boss Svenska Spel ended his speech by demanding that the rules for these operators be changed, especially regarding user safety measures. In particular, he suggested introducing a self-exclusion procedure for restaurant casinos.
